Introduction: Offshoring, globalization and the digital economy present opportunities, risks and challenges, and as today’s supply chains get longer, it’s vital to stay up-to-date and master the tools that are available to help us develop strong supplier relationships, back-up plans and options.

1. Incoterms: the rules that define the division of costs and risks between seller and buyer. Don’t just use the ones the company has always used, or the ones your supplier puts forward - Know them well to be able to use the ones best suited to your needs.

2. International payments. Suppliers don’t want to give us open terms and we should avoid paying in advance. 3 tools are available to us:

  • Stand-By credits.

We’ll look at how they work and the pros and cons of each.
 

3. Free Trade Agreements in general.

  • How they work
  • How they are structured
  • The rules of origin
  • The certificates of origin
  • Cumulation of origin
  • Transhipments
  • The responsibilities of seller and buyer
  • Anti-dumping duties
  • List Canada’s current FTA’s and future ones

4. Detailed study of NAFTA, how it works, what’s different with the USMCA.
 

5. Detailed study of CETA (Free Trade Agreement with the European Union): Do you know this has been in effect since Sept 2017.
 

6. Detailed study of the TPP (Transpacific Partnership), in effect in 2019.
 

7. Customs Conformity.

  • Overview of the main elements of customs conformity (description/HS code, value, origin, intellectual property, rulings) 
  • How they can impact our bottom line
  • Be compliant and build a good traceability to avoid delays and additional costs

8. International Logistics:

  • How truck, ocean and air freight works
  • The players
  • How to negotiate rates
